Fanny Brice's narrative begins with her young days in New York's Lower East Side, where the star-struck teenager fluffs her way through burlesque and vaudeville, wishing to make it big despite being put down by her friends and family, who tell her she isn't beautiful enough for the stage. It is based on the events in the life of the Ziegfeld Follies star just before, during, and after World War I. Additionally, it portrays the tale of her romance with Nick Arnstein, a charming man about town whose attraction Fanny finds irresistible, and eventually, their subsequent failed union.
