Beauty And The Beast at Durham Performing Arts Center

Beauty and The Beast, the musical, debuted on Broadway way back in 1994. There's no reason to try and hide this, it was bested because of the success of the Lion King. Over the years, there have been different attempts to bring the story back into the mainstream theater scene. After a successful run in London's West End, and an extensive tour of Australia, this revival is going on a US tour. One of the stops will luckily be in Durham, North Carolina on Tuesday 9th September 2025.

In previous versions of the show, the design of the set and the style of the costumes were both kind of dark. This put a lot of weight on The Beast character. This current production is going in a completely different direction. The emphasis is more on Belle, as it should've always been. This time around, the audience is greeted with thoughtfully crafted backgrounds and bright costumes that light up the stage. When you pair that with the traditional soundtrack, you begin to see why both the British and Australian audiences took a liking to this revival. Forgive the spoilers, but the bright entrance that Belle's character and the different members of her French village make, is the perfect counterpart to The Beast's world. What happened in both the UK and Australia was that audiences were incredibly hooked by this point in the story. Things likely won't be any different this Tuesday at Durham Performing Arts Center and the entire US tour for that matter. Gaston's entrance and musical number tend to be fan favorites. It's truly Belle who makes this story go though, and for this US Tour they've picked a great actress for the role. At the end of the night, you'll be singing and dancing as you waltz out of Durham Performing Arts Center.
