A Christmas Carol is a beautiful tale that genuinely sparks the holiday spirit. One of the holiday wonders of North Carolina is Theatre in the Park’s production of this timeless tale. A Christmas Carol initially premiered in 1974, and it starred Ira David Wood III as Ebenezer Scrooge at only 26 years old. Now, the production is heading for its 50th annual year and is marked as a monumental event as the star of the show turns 76 years old!

“I can’t believe it, either,” Wood says. “I tell everybody I started the show at age 12, which makes me feel a little better. But I was 26 when we opened, and I’ll turn 76 in November. So it seemed like the time was right to hang it up, pass the torch. I just thought that nobody wants to see a 76-year-old running around in tights anymore.”

Theatre in the Park’s production of A Christmas Carol is one of the most successful theatre productions in North Carolina. Every year, the show adds new updates; it always feels like your first time seeing it. It’s undeniable that this exact production of A Christmas Carol is North Carolina’s standard of getting into the Christmas Spirit!

Wood is always excited to reprise his role as Scrooge – a role that he embodies so well. The success of the show can be attributed to his commanding stage presence. He said, “Performing the role of Scrooge has become a lot like playing in a Super Bowl game! It takes an enormous amount of preparation and practice prior to the big day. Once you’re on the field, you give it everything you possibly can muster. I must admit that the rest during ‘half time’ is now greatly anticipated and appreciated. After all, I’m still doing a role that was initially created by and for a man in his twenties. With each passing year, it’s gratifying to know that I can still hit the mark.”
