BACKGROUND

The Phantom of the Opera is a classic musical that opened in London’s West End in 1986. The musical is spearheaded by legendary composer Andrew Lloyd Webber who also wrote the book with playwright Richard Stillgoe. The musical is based on the Gothic French horror novel, the Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. The musical wa originally led by director Harold Prince and the production features music by Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart. Premiering in London in 1986, the musical went on to become the second longest running West End musical of all time. Meanwhile, on Broadway, Phantom of the Opera opened in 1988 and went on to become the longest running Broadway show of all time. 

Moreover, Phantom of the Opera has been recorded to have grossed over $6 billion worldwide and have been seen by over 140 million viewers across the globe. For its Broadway run alone, the musical grossed over $1 billion. Phantom of the Opera has been staged in 183 cities and over 40 countries. 

PLOT

The Paris Opera House is preparing for the production of Hannbal. Things are hectic with rehearsals underway and the set still being constructed, a back drop falls while star soprano Carlotta was singing the aria. The chorus girls shout about the presence of the Phantom which implores Carlotta to walk out. Without a soprano, the production was forced to bring in a young singer Christina Dae who supposedly knows all of Carlotta’s songs. As she sings the aria for the night’s performance, Christina catches the attention of Raoul, her childhood friend. During back stage Christina confesses to her friend that she has been training in secret with her Ange of Music. Little does anybody know tha the Angel of Music is Phantom and he is in love with Christina. Th Phantom’s obsession and jealousy will be the starting point of dramatic turn of events in this musical! AWARDS

The West End production in 1986 brought in a ton of massive awards which includes two Laurience Olivier Awards with one award for Best New Musical. The later productions of Phantom of the Opera later won two more Olivier Awards, including Most Popular Show and Magic Radio Audience Award. Over on Broadway, the Phantom of the Opera bagged a heck ton of accolades including seven Tony Awards, seven Drama Desk Awards, and five Outer Critics Circle Awards. The Off Broadway Revival also locked in a couple of prestigious recognitions including winning Outstanding Creative Collaboration at the Drama Desk Awards and six Outer Critics Circle nominations.

CREATIVE TEAM

The Phantom of the Opera had the cream of crop in West End theater. For starters, the musical was spearheaded by Andrew Lloy Webber, a multi awarded legendary composer known for his works with Cats and Jesus Christ Superstar. Lyricist Charles Hart works with Webber to deliver the most iconic titles like “The Music of the Night,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “All I Ask of You,” and tons more. The musical’s original production was directed by Hal Prince. But later productions brought in additional direction from brilliant directors including Seth Sklar Heyn. The production follows musical stage and choreography from Gilliane Lynn and co-orchestration from David Cullen.

The production’s team of outstanding designers also include Andrew Brigde on lighting, Mick Potter on sound, Matt Kinley on set design, Stefan Alexander on wig, Hair and make up, and George Reeve on video design. Chrissie Cartwright adapts staging and choreography while Kristen Blodgette leads music supervision. The North American touring cast includes Isaiah Bailey as The Phantom, Jordan Lee Gilber at Christina Daae, Daniel Lopez as Raoul, Midori Marsh as Carlotta, William Thomas Evans as Monsieur Firmin, Carrington VIlmont as Monsieur Andre, Lisa Vroman as Madame Giry, and Melo Ludwig as Meg Giry. REVIEWS

With the newer production taking the stages, the Phantom of the Opera is bringing in new audiences and a fresh string of reviews from fans and critics. Theater and Tonic wrote in their review, “We know the iconic songs, we are aware of the tragic love story, but seeing it brought to life on stage is something so magical it’s a sure win in my eyes as one of the best musicals of all time.” The writer goes on to add, “From beginning to end, you are filled with a constant sense of enchantment.”

Over at Theater Mania, a review of the 2025 production was all praises, “The Phantom of the Opera is as thrilling as ever on the road.” The writer continue to laud the newer work that pays amazing ode to the original, “The musical’s new touring production has brought back the stunning original design with a better-than-ever cast. With only a few small changes to the set and scenery, this staging is overall what Broadway offered, but with refreshed, rejuvenated performances.” Around Town Chicago gave compliments to the North American touring cast, “This young cast is solid and energy levels are quite high.
