Synopsis

Set in the colorful and raw streets of Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, the story follows 17-year-old Ali, a fiery teen’s quest for identity amid her watchful single mother’s watchful eye. Follow Ali as she rebels and discovers her musical talent through piano lessons with her sage mentor, Miss Liza Jane, and sparks a romance with street drummer Knuck. Struggles rise with personal conflicts involving her absentee father, Davis. Through triumphs and challenges, Ali learns to embrace her voice, her heritage, and the neighborhood that defines her. This timeless and heartfelt coming-of-age journey is brimming with spirit, love, and the power of music.

Hell's Kitchen began development in 2011, based on Alicia Keys' life story. It premiered Off-Broadway at The Public Theater in 2023 to rave reviews, extending its run before moving to Broadway in 2024, with previews starting March 28 and an official opening on April 20. The show earned 13 Tony Award nominations in 2024, winning Best Actress in a Leading Role for Maleah Joi Moon and Best Featured Actress for Kecia Lewis. In 2025, it claimed the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
