In the winter of 1934, the American Financial Crisis has not yet been fixed and its effects are most pronounced in a decrepit board house in Duluth, Minnesota. Nick Laine fights to keep the property from being repossessed by the bank while his wife Elizabeth continues to battles with dementia but now and then shows signs of mental alertness. He's been having an affair with one of the tenants, Mrs. Neilsen, but is she really what he wants?
There are problems with Nick and Elizabeth's off-spring as well. Marianne is five months pregnant and is unmarried while Gene has an alcohol addiction and no goals in life. Visitors and various eccentric locals come and go, each with their own secrets and backstories. Amidst the poetic music of Bob Dylan, their secrets—which range from imprisonment to blackmail to morphine addiction—are progressively revealed.
